Energy Storage Systems (ESS Inc) is a fast-growing, venture-backed, multi patented, clean technology start-up, located in Wilsonville, OR. ESS has developed an extremely cost-effective energy management system that combines an environmentally safe, abundant and non-toxic iron electrolyte with our patented flow cell design. Our advanced flow battery technology combines high performance with low cost, renewable integration designed for commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

This position involves close interaction with numerous engineering disciplines. Applicant must be comfortable working in a team environment that is fast paced and dynamic. ESS is looking for a motivated, hard-working Test Technician to join our team. This person is responsible for maintaining test equipment (cleaning, building/fixing, calibrating), modifying test equipment under engineering supervision, making chemical solutions, providing high quality record keeping, and working with engineers as required.

The ideal candidate is someone who adaptable and understands the culture, the rigor and the challenges of a start-up environment.

  • Measure, mix and store wet and dry chemicals.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and procedures.
  • Set up and maintain test equipment per pre-defined procedures (or with direct supervision): mechanical builds and fixes; plumbing build and fixes; chemical cleanup (acids/bases, non-hazardous salts)
  • Ability to follow job required Standards and Safety Protocols, per pre-defined processes.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal work instructions.
  • Maintain clean working environment.
  • And other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to use basic hand tools including wrenches, hammer, tape measure, etc.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills consistently without error.
  • Familiar with data collection and entry. MS Excel preferred.
  • Ability to take and follow detailed notes.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a small, dynamic team.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Any chemical handling experience is a plus.
  • Ability to follow job required Standards and Safety Protocols, per pre-defined processes.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protection Equipment according to OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment with dynamic daily priorities.
  • Experience in new-product introduction and scale to manufacturing.
  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience.
